Welcome to my column with Caledonista. Each fortnight I’ll be alternating between beauty and fashion; sharing my favourite looks, trends and products with you.
Outfit of the Month
I’ve been in love with the checked blazer and slogan t-shirt trends recently, so I paired them both together in this smart, casual look. The ¾ Sleeve Check Blazer is £60 from River Island’s Plus range; the Denim Original High-Waisted Skirt in Midwash Blue is £25 from ASOS Curve; as is the Boyfriend Fit T-Shirt with Beaded Power Motif, which is £18.
It’s such an easy and quick look to throw together, and even something as simple as changing the t-shirt will allow you to wear these pieces together time and again. I’ve been wearing this out shopping, to meetings and to brunch. It really is a ‘one size fits all’ outfit. Checked blazers and slogan t-shirts will, individually, never go out of fashion either.
Statement, billowing sleeves are everywhere this AW17, and the more ruffles the better. Emilia Wickstead, Mulberry and Alexander McQueen all had their models rocking them in this season’s catwalk shows. They can really transform an otherwise simple top or blouse.
There are plenty of affordable ways to wear this trend, online and on the high street, too. This Orange Shift Dress with Ruffled Sleeves (£49 from La Redoute) turns a very simple shift dress into something that can really turn heads. This Pink Ruffled Sleeve Coat from Miss Selfridge is one you’ll have to snap up fast as it’s currently half price in the Black Friday sales, at £37.50. At Wallis you can jump on the check bandwagon and also dip into the statement sleeve trend with this Textured Flute Sleeve Shift Dress (£25.20 from House of Fraser).

I love the Instagram feed from Sydney aka @sydandthecityy. She’s a stunning, plus-size fashion and colour lover from San Diego, California. She’s new to Instagram and only has 600 followers, but deserves a whole lot more. Her photos are all a riot of colour and are so well composed. Her style is casual and her feed is great inspiration for how to pair pieces together. Her pink hair is giving me major jealousy too.

Outfit of the Month
I love the deep red and berry tones of autumn and winter, and I also love biker and aviator-style jackets. This red one from Missguided Plus at ASOS – the Shearling Borg Aviator Jacket in Burgundy (£65) – is perfect for me. It has a real statement collar and cuffs, and is delightfully cosy in the colder weather.
I think my ASOS Curve Smock Dress in Floral Print (£30) pairs so well with this jacket. I love still incorporating bright colours into my autumn and winter looks. The high waist on this dress is very flattering and it goes well with boots, trainers or heels. An ideal choice to dress up or down.
With so much colour and print going on with this outfit, I kept my accessory choices very simple. The Reclaimed Vintage Inspired Suede Round Cross Body Bag in Black, also from ASOS, compliments the fabric of the jacket and has a laid-back retro look to it. I wore this outfit for Sunday brunch and it’s my favourite of the month.
I am loving the botanical trend of pairing clashing floral fabrics. Seen on the AW17 catwalks by the likes of Erdem, Gucci and Dries Van Noten, this trend is eye-catching and shows you are fashion-forward. It’s a very easy trend to re-create at home with pieces from the high street too. Try to stick to the same type of fabric, e.g. chiffon or silk, to keep the look fluid.
At Debenhams, the Izabel London Multicoloured Oriental Floral Print Kimono (£30) looks great belted over their Blue Vanilla Wine Floral Tie-Back Tulip Dress (£25). Over at House of Fraser, I adore the Ted Baker Zakai Floral Printed Skirt (£139) worn with their Mango Ruffles Floral Blouse in Blue (£35.99) tucked in.

I am obsessed with the Instagram feed of US blogger and influencer Liz Best – she has the best smart casual style, and is a great source of inspiration for styling up band tees and slogan tees. I’m a bit addicted to t-shirts at the moment, so it’s great to see the different items that she pairs them with. Her looks are so cool, but so easy at the same time.
