The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Here are 5 of our top superfoods, straight to your rescue.

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

If you, like us, have your feelers out subconsciously always trying to find the newest, best and fastest way to lose weight or generally better yourself (is that such a crime?) then the word ‘superfood’ will definitely not be new to you.

But, what actually are superfoods? With a name that does literally deem them as the superheroes of the food world, we quite rightly, have pretty high expectations for the powers that they possess. Although no true definition to superfoods exists, they tend to hold qualities that link directly to weight loss, lower risk of depression and other chronic illnesses such heart disease, strokes and cancer.

With food brands across the globe recognising this trend in superfoods, the question it becomes difficult to answer is how much of what they feed us is really true? (pun intended) And how much of it just comes down to clever marketing efforts? Although unfortunately we cannot answer this question,  what we can do is provide you with a run-down of our 5 most favoured, effective, and trustworthy superfoods. Sure to leave you feeling healthier on the inside and out. We hope this post provides you with some valuable food for thought. (I'm sorry, we just couldn't help ourselves)

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Chia Seeds

Superpower: due to them being rich in fibre, omega-3 fats, protein, vitamins and minerals, their benefits are extremely diverse. From improving the skin and digestive system to maintaining a healthy heart, as well as boosting energy and metabolism! Originally grown in Mexico, they were deemed the “runners food” due to their slow releasing properties, providing longer lasting energy and stamina. These tiny seeds are so easy to incorporate into your diet! Perfect for adding to smoothies, salads, oats or stir fries.

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Blueberries

Superpower: as well as being low in calories, these berries hold an abundance of antioxidants in their tiny little bodies. Antioxidants are vital for repairing any cell damage, therefore fighting off viruses and other unwanted illnesses. Said to hold the most antioxidants out of all of the fruits, they are also perfect for satisfying those sweet cravings too.

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Garlic

Superpower: garlic boosts the immune system and has often been used as an alternative to antibiotics. Specifically, garlic slows the growth of harmful bacteria, yeasts and fungi and also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. Another benefit of this superfood is that it’s mega easy to incorporate into most meals, used as seasoning. Just make sure you have a pack of mints handy if you choose to embrace this pungent superfood!

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Salmon

Superpower:  salmon is the perfect source of protein (a vital component for maintaining a balanced and healthy diet), omega-3 fatty acids, and endless minerals. This tasty fish also holds anti-ageing powers, reduces inflammation, cholesterol and slashes the risk of cancer. Consuming fresh salmon around three times a week also contributes to healthy hair, skin, nails and bones. Win, win, win!

The Ultimate 5 Superfoods

Spinach

Superpower: these leaves are a GREAT source of iron, which is most commonly consumed through meat. As it is sometimes hard to incorporate meat into all meals, adding a little bed of spinach to your plate couldn’t be easier! Iron is essential in our blood in order to fuel our muscles for energy. Researches recently discovered that the compounds found in spinach actually increase the efficiency of our energy producing cells, meaning that a cup of spinach a day could literally improve our ability to last longer in the gym, at work, shopping, even partying!

Now, if anyone knows any recipes containing chia seeds, blueberries, garlic, salmon and spinach all together, do let us know!
